Battle Born 100 Ah 12 Volt LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Battery is 'drop-in' replacement for lead-acid deep cycle batteries in marine, RV, golf cart and other applications where lightweight and reliable battery is required. Due to the LiFePO4 technology and protective electronics, battery also feature high number (3000-5000) charge-discharge cycles, high/low voltage protection, short-circuit protection, temperature protection, automatic cell balancing and can be even charged with battery chargers designed for lead acid batteries.
But, it also costs more than similar 100Ah 12V SLA AGM batteries.
Battery physical dimensions are (L x W x H) 12.75 x 6.875 x 9 (~32.4 x 17.5 x 22.9 cm) and it fits between Group 27 and Group 31 - hence, it should be considered as BCI Group 31 battery.
Battery weighs only 29 pounds (13.2 kg) - for comparison, 'similar' SLA AGM deep cycle, 100Ah 12V, group 31 Exide XMC-31 battery weighs 68 pounds (31 kg). That is 2.3x difference in weight for the same 20 Ah capacity. Also, since Exide XMC-31 is SLA battery, it can withstand fewer charge-discharge cycles.
Maximum allowed continuous current is 100 Amps, while maximum surge current for 30 seconds is 200 Amps. Note that manufacturer states that even higher surge currents are allowed for half a second (0.5 s) surges, but actual amperes are not stated.
For comparison, Exide XMC-31 is also deep cycle battery, but its MCA rating is 1110 Amps. Note that Exide XMC-31 is one of the best batteries in its class.
Since Battle Born 100Ah 12V LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Battery is designed to be 'drop-in' replacement for lead acid batteries, its acceptable voltages are between 14.4 and 14.6 for bulk charging and can be charged using lead-acid battery chargers. Since special LiFePO4 battery chargers do the same job faster, they are highly recommended.
However, if possible, it is recommended by the manufacturer to set:
- bulk/absorption charge for 14.2-14.6V. Battery is designed for this voltage and it operates safely up to 14.6 V. If too high voltage is applied, internal protective circuits will prevent the damage to the battery itself.
- float charge to "Off" or at 13.6V. This is LiFePO4 battery with very low self discharge rate, requiring no 'float charge' as lead-acid batteries do.
- equalization to "Off" or below 14.6V. Cell balancing is done via built-in electronics, so there is no need for the charger to try to do the same.
Battle Born LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Battery - Recommended Use
As lightweight replacement for deep cycle acid batteries, Battle Born 100 Ah 12V deep cycle battery applications are almost endless: as marine deep cycle battery, as excellent lithium RV battery, as golf cart battery, as home solar/wind turbine/generator battery etc.
Trolling motor battery: since electric trolling motors require up to 60 Amps of current at full throttle, single battery can supply such current for about 90 minutes. Since trolling is rarely done 'at full throttle', single battery can supply required power for longer period of time.
Note: stronger electric trolling motors operate at 24V, 36V or even more volts, requiring 2, 3 or more deep cycle trolling batteries connected in series. Thanks to the design, Battle Born LiFePO4 deep cycle battery can be connected in series like any lead acid battery.
Many fishermen use lithium trolling batteries on smaller boats and kayaks - electric trolling motors on such boats require max. 25-30 Amps of current. Such units can operate for hours on a single battery charge.
Fish Finder Battery: fish finders and other electronics require more and more power every day. Fish finders on small boats and kayaks often have single battery as the only power source, which must last entire fishing trip. Most of smaller fish finder GPS combos require slightly less than 1 Amp of current, thus they can be kept operational for at least 4 days without turning them off using this Battle Born battery.
Deep Cycle Battery in Dual Battery Systems: Larger boats usually have two batteries, one starting/cranking battery used for staring main boat engine(s) and another for deep cycle operations, including powering the navigational lights, marine electronics, but also other energy hungry devices when main engine(s) are not running. As long as the load is kept under 100 Amps (normal deep cycle battery load is usually far below 100 Amps), Battle Born 100 Ah 12V battery can be used, with great savings in weight.
Starting Battery in Single Battery Systems: Smaller boats usually have single battery which is used for both starting main engine and for powering lights and onboard electronics. Since 200 Amps is maximum recommended/allowed current, if the engine starter of your boat requires less than 200 Amps, feel free to use this battery as dual purpose battery. Maximum starter current of larger engines is usually much larger than 200 Amps and in that case, good starter battery is better and cheaper choice.
RV engines require much more than 200 cranking Amps, so this Battle Born battery is practically useless as such.
But, as lithium house RV battery, it has great potential, not only in 12V systems, but also in systems using 24, 36 or 48 Volts (or even more).
The more deep cycle batteries are required, the larger weight savings will be. Initial battery pack price will also be substantial, but since these batteries tolerate 3000-5000 charge/discharge cycles, they are worth their money in the long run.
If the RV doesn't use microwave oven, air conditioner and similar appliances while main engine is off, any 100 Ah 12V battery will supply energy for long period of time - exact time depends on the electric load.
Golf Cart Applications
Most golf carts use 36 or 48V electric systems, requiring 3 or 4 12V golf cart batteries connected in series.
If golf cart motor requires less than 100 Amps continuously, this Battle Born battery is excellent choice because:
- total weight of battery pack is reduced, leading to better starting and driving golf cart performances and longer autonomy,
- since this is maintenance free battery, there is no need to add distilled water like in flooded cell batteries,
- these batteries can be charged/discharged more times, making them in the long run cheaper choices,
- working with batteries is easier, since similar lead acid batteries can be up to 40 pounds heavier, etc.
Off The Grid Systems
Battle Born 100Ah 12V battery is excellent choice for off the grid systems where energy is harvested from the sun or wind or generated locally and requires to be stored for later use.
Although weight savings in such systems is not of the most importance, these batteries are very efficient, have low self-discharge rate, and tolerate high number of deep charge/discharge cycles - everything what good solar battery requires.
Long Story Short: if you need a good starting or dual purpose battery capable of supplying hundreds of amperes for starting internal combustion engines, stay away from this battery. Plain and simple.
However, if you need excellent deep cycle battery that is 'drop-in' replacement for BCI Group 31 SLA batteries and that tolerate much larger number of charging/discharging cycles in applications like trolling motor battery, fishfinder (marine electronics) battery, golf cart battery, RV house battery, solar deep cycle battery, etc. consider Battle Born 100Ah 12V battery.
Initially it does cost more than SLA batteries, but reduced weight and longevity are often worth that extra cost.
