Brooklyn Kayak Company's BKC UH-TK181 (also formerly know as 'Useful UH-TK181') is one of the best buy fishing kayaks on the market. BKC UH-TK181 is strong and sturdy sit-on-top kayak, providing a stable fishing platform in various weather and sea/river/lake surface conditions. Although designed for two adults, one person can easily paddle the kayak and maneuver with it. BKC UH-TK181 is not the lightest two-person kayak, but it can be easily pulled out onto the sandy or similar beach by a single person.
BKC UH-TK181 fishing kayak is sit-on-top kayak - this means that person or persons are seating in the kayak, with seats above the water level, if the kayak is not overloaded. Any excess weight will cause the water to enter the kayak via scupper holes, unless they are equipped with scupper valves (rarely found, IMHO not even recommended in most situations) - BKC UH-TK181 comes with 8 scupper holes.
The hull is 12'5" (~397 cm) long, beam is 34' (~86.5 cm) wide, and the whole kayak weighs respectable 68 pounds (~31 kg). If required, it can be pick off the ground or even carried on short distances by a single adult, preferably a stronger person, but if you plan on such activities, consider lighter fishing kayak. Two persons can easily carry the UH-TK181 around.
Maximum load capacity is 450 pounds (~204 kg) with the seats for two persons. So, if you are a larger person (like the author of this article), feel free to use this kayak as an excellent single-person kayak, especially if you plan the fishing trips that last more than just one morning or afternoon.
Hull is strong and comes with several, very interesting and useful features. Smooth and somewhat angular bow cuts through the water with ease, decreasing the waves splashing the paddlers. Built-in stern skeg and channels along the hull's bottom keep kayak straight while paddling, but also allows one paddler to maneuver the kayak - very important, especially when fishing for larger game fish (not recommended of course, but really exciting way of fishing!!!).
Handling the kayak is easy, thanks to the multiple carrying handles. There is a total of four carrying handles - one on the bow, two on the sides and one on the stern. Bow and stern handles could be perhaps more robust, but they are OK.
The BKC UH-TK181 kayak features two secure paddle rests - each paddle is strapped securely to the hull of the kayak, but if required, can be used within seconds. This frees the hands for fishing or other activities.
This sit-on-top fishing kayak comes with 7 fishing rod holders - 3 holders are adjustable (one - forward seat, two - rear seat) and 4 are flush-mounted for stability, right behind the seats. Such arrangement allows even a single fisherman to have multiple lines in the water at the same time - great for catching more fish, or for getting lines entangled :)
BKC UH-TK181 fishing kayak comes in several colors: blue, desert sand, green cammo, red/yellow, and gray cammo.
The UH-TK181 kayak has a rear cargo area which is secured via a standard secure bungee tie-down system. This cargo area could be larger, but this is 12.5 foot kayak for two adults - kayaks of this size simply can't have larger storage area.
However, the BKC UH-TK181 kayak comes with two waterproof storage hatches. They are large enough to store a wallet, smartphone, keys, snacks, and similar items that don't react well to water. The watertight storage compartments are located between each paddler's legs and can be opened and closed quickly, without tools of any kind.
Seats are comfortable even without the seat inserts, but for longer trips the seat inserts are recommended.
The BKC UH-TK181 comes with paddles and seats.
It is possible to buy or improvise trolling motor mount - electric trolling motor is quiet during operation and it helps the fisherman to change the fishing location without much effort or can be used for trolling. Due to the size and weight of the loaded kayak, small trolling motor in the 30-40 lbs range is more than enough - just be sure to add the weight of the trolling battery to the total kayak's load and to use, if possible, fully insulated cables and/or battery center. Note: when you make such improvisations, whatever you do, it is your responsibility only!
Fishing kayaks and pets - always keep your pet on the front seat, regardless of the size. This way, the paddler can observe the pet all the time and intervene promptly, if required. Also, such layout provides the best trim of the kayak. Even if the pet is heavier than the paddler, keep your pet ahead of you, just in case!
The BKC UH-TK181 comes with 1-year warranty, although some sources claim 5-year warranty period.
Long Story Short - Although Brooklyn Kayak Company is not the most famous/known kayak company, thanks to the models like this one, that is going to change, soon.
Their BKC UH-TK181 is very good, robust and reliable fishing sit-on-top kayak. Although little bit heavy out of the water, it is reasonably steady and agile - well balanced design.
