Newport Vessels Kayak Series 36lb/55lb Thrust Transom Mounted Saltwater Electric Trolling Motor
Newport Vessels Kayak Series electric trolling motors is a group of electric trolling motors designed for use on kayaks and similar small vessels.
Newport Vessels Kayak Series electric trolling motors feature short fiberglass composite shaft, lightweight design, extra-long cables, and few more details important for the use on the vessels that are very low on the water.
Newport Vessels Kayak Series Features and Specifications
At the moment, Newport Vessels Kayak Series consists of two models, 36 and 55 pounds thrust electric trolling motor.
Both models feature 24 inches (~61 cm) long fiberglass composite shafts and height adjusting collars for setting proper prop depth.
Since shafts are made from fiberglass, they are strong and flexible and when the motor hits the bottom objects (rocks, for example), shafts tend to bent and not to break - a great feature, but don't abuse it!
Both trolling motors feature 5'6" (~1.68 m) long power cords, allowing the fisherman/kayaker to freely position in the best possible arrangement both the motor and the battery on the kayak/pontoon/boat.
Speed is variable, with 8-speed settings - 5 forward and three reverse. Motor handle is 6 inches (~15 cm) long, but it is telescopic and may be extended if required.
Both motors are intended for saltwater use and feature durable aluminum motor head, with other highly stressed parts made of stainless steel.
Also, both motors feature 5-points LED battery meters, helping the user see the remaining battery charge.
Note: battery meters are designed for lead-acid batteries and NOT for lithium-ion batteries. If the lithium batteries are used (they are actually not recommended by the manufacturer) readings from the battery meters are not correct, which can cause safety issues, depending on the lithium battery being used.
Both motors feature a 2-year limited warranty, which is an excellent warranty for motors intended for saltwater use.
Newport Vessels Kayak Series 55 Pounds Electric Trolling Motor features a nominal voltage of 12 volts and a maximum current of 52 Amps.
The battery is not included, but if the motor is used at the full throttle, good, deep discharge AGM marine battery with 100Ah 20h nominal capacity can power this motor for at least one hour, with some energy left for the safety.
Note: When 100Ah 20h AGM battery is being discharged for one hour, its actual (1h) capacity decreases down to 55-65% (70-72% for premium 100Ah AGM batteries) of the battery's 20h capacity.
Also, 55 pounds motor weighs 23 pounds (~10.4 kg) and can be easily carried around.
On average, 7.5 feet (~2.3 m) boat can be propelled up to 4 mph - maximum speed of fishing kayaks depends on the kayak size and load, but even larger ocean-going fishing kayaks can easily reach 3-4 mph (again, depends on the size and load).
55 pounds motor features 3-bladed fiberglass-reinforced propeller.
Newport Vessels Kayak Series 36 Pounds Electric Trolling Motor is very similar to 55 lbs model, except it weighs 20 pounds (~9.1 kg), it features a maximum current of 29 Amps and is able to push the 7.5 feet (~2.3 m) boat up to 3.5 mph.
Also, it features 2-blade fiberglass-reinforced propeller.
Long Story Short: If You are looking for an electric trolling motor with relatively short, but durable shaft, transom-mounted and intended for saltwater use, consider one of these models.
They are both very popular electric trolling motors, both tested in different real-life situations and are well-liked by their users.
