Watersnake T24S ASP Saltwater Transom Mount Electric Trolling Motor
Watersnake T24S is lightweight and compact, electric trolling motor with transom mount. It is powered with 12 volts battery and features 24 pounds (~10.9 kg) thrust with 24 Amps max draw.
Its 24 inch (61 cm) adjustable long shaft features 1 inch (25 mm) outside diameter and allows the user to set the propeller at optimal depth.
For people with kayaks and similar small boats, pontoons and rafts, version with kayak bracket is also available.
Watersnake T24S electric trolling motor weighs just 6.7 pounds (~3 kg) without the battery, of course.
Its construction is rather simple, including its controls - the unit features only two speeds (High and Low), with forward and reverse switch.
More gradual power control would be nice, but that would also require PWM electronic controller - more complicated electrics and electronics, also probably slightly increase in price.
Watersnake T24S doesn't feature battery monitor, so using a marine power center with the battery status monitor is highly recommended.
Such power centers are basically plastic boxes that protect the batteries from wind, sun, water and similar, and they commonly offer automatic circuit breakers, USB charging ports, battery status monitors and similar.
Watersnake's T24S shaft is 24 inches (61 cm) long, with the total height of the unit ~32 inches (~81 cm).
Unit feature plastic, two-blade propeller designed to be able to cut even through tough sea grass and vegetation, but personally, it could be little bit more robust. But, if you have a spare propeller, and you must replace the old one, it can be done relatively quickly, even on the water.
Before using Watersnake T24S as the kayak trolling motor, consider few things first:
- what is the capacity of your kayak? Watersnake T24S weighs only 6.7 pounds, but it also requires battery to operate. AGM batteries are relatively cheap and very reliable, but also heavy. On the other hand, lithium batteries weigh 3-4 times less, but they tend to be very expensive.
- where to place the battery? Marine power center box requires more space than the battery alone, but such power center also simplifies the use and monitoring of the battery, and allows the user to easily connect other devices as well, for example, small navigational lights, small fish finder and similar.
- how to mount the electric trolling motor? Watersnake T24S also features a version with the kayak mount bracket, enabling the user to semi-permanently mount the motor on the kayak - if the kayak's construction can handle it.
When mounting single trolling motor on the kayak, its asymmetric thrust is not of an issue, since the fisherman can set the motor in the direction which neutralizes the offset thrust. Or one can mount two motors symmetrically on the heavy duty and heavy laden kayaks.
Since Watersnake T24S is intended for saltwater use, it features anti-corrosive paint and stainless steel external and internal parts. Nonetheless, after each use, it is recommended to rinse the unit with fresh water and dry it with the cloth.
Watersnake T24S comes with one year warranty.
How to Choose the Best Battery for the Watersnake T24S?
Sometimes it can be really hard to choose the best battery for electric trolling motor. But, before buying the battery, consider few things like battery size and weight, required battery capacity, electric trolling motor max current, battery price and similar.
One of the very popular electric trolling motor batteries is VMAXTANKS MR107-85 AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) SLA (Sealed Lead Acid) battery.
It feature 12 volts nominal voltage, 85 Ah nominal capacity, spill proof design, can operate practically in any position, it is very vibration resistant and its Reserve Capacity value is 160 minutes - the battery is capable of providing 25 Amps for 160 minutes, at 77°F (25°C), while keeping the battery voltage above 10.5 volts (1.75 volts per cell).
That means that VMAXTANKS MR107-85 AGM battery is capable of powering the Watersnake T24S motor (max draw current of 24 Amps) for at least 160 minutes at full power and when the speed is set to 'Low', this operating time is even longer.
On the other hand, Watersnake T24S weighs 6.7 pounds, while VMAXTANKS MR107-85 AGM weighs 55 pounds (~24.9 kg).
Lithium trolling batteries are much lighter, but they also cost much more.
Long Story Short: Watersnake T24S is simple and affordable electric trolling motor for smaller vessels, kayaks included.
It features only two power settings, but it is simple, rather well built and designed. IMHO, propellers could be more robust and when they hit the underwater rocks, they tend to shatter, protecting the rest of the unit.
If you are looking for an entry level electric trolling motor, consider this unit.
