Streamlight ProTac HL-X 1000 Lumens Professional Tactical Flashlight
Streamlight ProTac HL-X is a high quality professional tactical flashlight. Its maximum output is 1000 lumens, it can be powered using two CR123A or one 18650 battery, comes with several modes of operation, it is IPX7 water resistant, long range etc. and is excellent choice as a great EDC flashlight or as a flashlight for any outdoors enthusiast.
Streamlight ProTac HL-X is made using 6000 series machined aircraft aluminum with Type II MIL-Spec anodized finish and is available in black color.
ProTac HL-X accepts two types of batteries:
- CR123A lithium non-rechargeable battery, which is excellent choice when the flashlight is used as EDC flashlight - CR123A is known for its lightweight and very long shelf life with almost no self-discharge.
- 18650 lithium ion rechargeable battery , which is excellent choice for flashlights that are used frequently. 18650 batteries are known for their great capacity and available power. Note that newer 18650 batteries come with low self-discharge rate too, but not as low as CR123A batteries. For more on these batteries, check our Best 18650 Batteries and Chargers article.
Streamlight ProTac HL-X physical dimensions: 5.43 inches (13.8 cm) in length, 1.44 inches (~3.7 cm) head diameter, 1 inch (2.54 cm) body diameter, 5.7 oz (162g) weight with CR123A batteries and 6.2 oz (176g) weight with Streamlight 18650 rechargeable battery.
Obviously, this is not the smallest EDC/Tactical flashlight on the market, but it delivers 1000 lumens max. using C4 high-power LED, which is very shock resistant and comes with 50.000-hour lifetime.
Streamlight ProTac HL-X Modes of Operation
The flashlight features 'TEN-TAP Programming' allowing the user to choose from three selectable programs: high/strobe/low, high only, and low/medium/high.
Maximum mode produces 1,000 lumens beam of light, with the range of up to 330 m. Maximum runtime in maximum mode is 1.25 hours with CR123A batteries and 1.5 hours using 18650 battery.
Medium mode produces 400 lumens, with the maximum range of 200 m. Maximum operating time in this mode is 3 hours using CR123A batteries and 3.5 hours using 18650 battery.
Low mode produces 'just' 65 lumens, with the maximum range of 80m. Maximum operating time is 20 hours using CR123A batteries and 23 hours (almost a day!) using 18650 battery.
Strobe mode is used for signaling or disorienting potential attacker and its maximum operating time is 2.5 hours using CR123A batteries and 3.25 hours using 18650 battery.
Obviously, better results are achieved using fully charged 18650 battery, especially when high-power and high-capacity 18650 battery is used - such good battery can cost more than some cheap 'tactical' flashlights, but it is worth every (euro)cent, especially if the user is caught in situation which requires such battery!
'Attack head' is not as 'aggressive' as heads of most 'tactical' flashlights, but it can be used for self-defense efficiently, thanks to strong and robust aluminum body - strong blow or punch in the head can cause serious injuries, or even worse. If you find yourself in such situation, IMHO, try to disorient attacker using maximum or strobe modes and use that time to run away ...
ProTac HL-X comes with IPX7 level of protection - waterproof to 1m for 30 minutes. Obviously, it is not diving flashlights, but IPX7 is good enough for most outdoor enthusiasts that like fishing, camping, hunting, hiking etc.
Also, flashlight is resistant to 2m drops, just don't do it often (IMHO, don't do it at all!).
Anti-roll head design helps the flashlight not to roll away when positioned on the flat surface.
Streamlight ProTac HL-X comes with two CR123A batteries, pocket clip and nylon holster. If you prefer 18650 batteries, they and their charger must be ordered separately.
Long Story Short: Streamlight ProTac HL-X is excellent tactical and EDC flashlight. It is not cheap unit, but it is robust and durable, can be powered using different batteries, has different modes of operation and it is also excellent - gift!
