Penn Battle II Spinning Reels are strong and durable. They have full metal body, sideplate and rotor, and have total of 6 sealed stainless ball bearings. These reels are not designed for big game fishing and absence of roll bearings is more than acceptable. However, in combination with proper fishing rods and some patience, they are capable of landing some surprising catches.

Penn Battle II Spinning Reel vary in size significantly and they can be used by both beginners and serious fishermen, fishing from the boat, pier, beach, coast etc.
Some people find them relatively heavy when compared with their size - graphite body would make them lighter, but it would also increase the price. IMHO - they are not that heavier :)
Penn Battle II Spinning Reels have both right and left reel handle positions, so they are suitable for left and right handed people.
Drag system is positioned on the front of the reel and is very smooth and accurate - very important when using non-stretch fishing lines.
Reel has rather simple and common gearing system for spinning reel and the whole unit is mostly well designed and made.
We say 'mostly', because some users complain about the Penn's blue grease, which is everywhere in the reel (actually a good thing), but such amount of grease make reel turn harder - some users even remove some of the grease and replace it with Penn's reel oil.
Also, anti-reverse switch could be perhaps done better, especially on smaller models.
Long Story Short - Penn Battle II Spinning Reels are good spinning, saltwater reels. They will do their job properly - most of the time. When they operate, they do operate perfectly. When they misbehave, some tooling is required to tweak the units a little bit - not something that a fisherman wants to do on the fishing trip.
Nonetheless, this is very popular, affordable reel and all 'negative' comments about this reel means that this reel is used very often, in various, real-life situations, which often push the reel to its limits. And people still like it, since it lands the fish and that is all what reels are about! :)
