Best 100 Ah AGM Deep Cycle Marine Battery

exide xmc 31 table100 Ah AGM batteries provide best balance between size of the battery in terms of mass, capacity, reserve capacity, cranking amps and of course, the price.

These batteries are commonly used as cranking batteries for smaller gas and diesel engines, as dual purpose batteries in electric systems where they are used as both cranking and deep cycle batteries for powering the electronics, pumps, lights and similar devices, and in the end, as deep cycle marine batteries for powering various electric and electronic devices, including electric trolling motors.

Best 100 Ah marine batteries can be AGM SLA type of batteries, can be flooded cell lead-acid batteries, and recently, they can be lithium ion batteries.

All types come with certain pros and cons, but most popular 100 Ah marine batteries are AGM deep cycle or dual purpose batteries.

Battery Types Quick Introduction

- flooded cell deep cycle marine batteries must operate in upward position, during operation they release hydrogen gas (very flammable) and thus must be stored in ventilated area. Also, from time to time, distilled water must be added to keep the acid levels in the cells. However, when compared with gel cells and AGM batteries, flooded cell batteries often have better weight to capacity ratio. Personally, I stay away from flooded cell batteries except for off-the-grid applications in elevated (no flood danger), well ventilated (no hydrogen buildup) basements.

- gel cell and AGM lead acid batteries are sealed type of batteries and can operate in any position, without the danger of spilling out the dangerous acid (electrolyte). Since they are sealed type of batteries, they are maintenance free - just don't abuse them too much or they can 'swell' or even burst.

battle born battery lifepo4 100ah 12v m- lithium ion batteries have excellent weight to capacity ratio, but they also cost more than lead acid batteries. Some lithium ion batteries are optimized for being discharged using low currents, while other lithium batteries are optimized for power and performances. Since these batteries are rather sensitive, they often come with protective electronics which monitors parameters like charging and discharging current, temperature, charge/discharge level and similar. One of the best thing about lithium ion batteries is that they often come as direct 'drop-in' replacement for AGM SLA batteries - excellent performance, large number of charge/discharge cycles, great weight savings, but they come with very nice price tags :)

- starting batteries are optimized for short burst of high currents. Starting batteries are generally not used for other purposes and are not the best choice for cycling use, except perhaps when they are not drained below 50% of their capacity.

- dual purpose batteries are capable of producing short bursts of high currents, but they also tolerate well cycling use, especially when they are not discharged below 70-75% of their capacity. As starting batteries they are not match to true starting batteries. Also, as deep cycle batteries they are not match for true deep cycle batteries. However, in single battery electric systems, these batteries are excellent choice since they are capable of powering various electric and electronic devices while main engine is off and when required, they can be used to start the main engine. Since modern boats come with plenty of electronics, dual purpose batteries are commonly found on them, while true starting batteries are slowly being phased out.

- deep cycle batteries are optimized for being discharged over longer period of time. However, 100 Ah deep cycle batteries are large enough to be able to produce short burst of high currents - not as deep cycle batteries and not even close to true starting batteries, but often strong enough to be able to start smaller gas and diesel engines.

Deep cycle marine batteries are used as electric trolling motor batteries, as RV house batteries, in marine dual battery systems, in solar and off-the-grid application and similar.

Also, there are many other marine batteries in 100 Ah range, but these are most popular due to their combination of durability, performance and price - hence, we consider them to be 'the best' 100 Ah marine batteries.

odyssey 31m pc2150 1mAs one can see in the table, for those needing good dual purpose 100 Ah marine battery, choice is either Odyssey 31M-PC2150 (dual purpose battery) or Exide XMC-31 (deep cycle).

Note that Exide XMC-31 is declared by manufacturer to be deep cycle type, but it can easily provide 1100 MCA (880 CCA) and it is almost 10 pounds (~4.3 kg) lighter than Odyssey 31M-PC2150 which can produce 1370 MCA (~1100 CCA). Also, both batteries are evenly matched regarding 20 Ah discharge capacity and reserve capacity.

But, as starting battery, Odyssey 31M-PC2150 is better than other batteries.

We have included in the list VMAXTANKS SLR125 and MR137 batteries (125 Ah and 120 Ah capacity respectively) - both batteries are very similar to other batteries in terms of size and weight, but they are optimized for off-the-grid applications and as true deep cycle batteries. VMAXTANKS SLR125 is excellent deep cycle battery, just don't ruin it with high charge/discharge currents.

Here is the short description of the listed batteries (again alphabetic order):

Battle Born 100 Ah 12 Volt LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Battery

battle born battery lifepo4 100ah 12v mBattle Born 100 Ah 12 Volt LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Battery is 'drop-in' replacement for lead-acid deep cycle batteries in marine, RV, golf cart and other applications where lightweight and reliable battery is required.

Due to the LiFePO4 technology and protective electronics, battery also feature high number (3000-5000) of charge-discharge cycles, high/low voltage protection, short-circuit protection, temperature protection, automatic cell balancing and can be even charged with battery chargers designed for lead acid batteries.

20 hour capacity is 100 Ah (5 Amps for 20 hours), maximum allowed continuous current is 100 Amps, while maximum surge current for 30 seconds is 200 Amps.

Also, manufacturer states that even higher surge currents are allowed for half a second (0.5 s) surges, but actual amperes are not stated.

This battery weighs only 29 lbs (13.2 kg), but it also costs more than similar 100Ah 12V SLA AGM batteries.

Battle Born 100 Ah lithium batteries are excellent deep cycle batteries for applications like trolling motor batteries, lightweight kayak/small boat fishfinder batteries, RV house batteries, golf cart batteries, marine deep cycle batteries, and similar. As starting batteries, forget them, no need to ruin such batteries even if they are protected by electronics.

Exide XMC-31 MEGACYCLE AGM-200 Sealed AGM Marine Battery

exide xmc 31 mExide MC-31 and XMC-31 MEGACYCLE AGM-200 Sealed Maintenance Free (AGM) Marine Batteries are two very similar, dual purpose marine batteries.

Being lead acid AGM batteries, they are rather heavy when compared with the similar lithium marine batteries, but they are much cheaper, have very good vibration resistance and are generally very robust and reliable.

Although Exide XMC-31 is defined as deep cycle battery, it has excellent cranking performances as well, being able to produce 1110 MCA (~890 CCA).

Also, as deep cycle battery, it's reserve capacity is 200 minutes - excellent choice as trolling motor battery, especially if the motor is not used at full throttle all the time.

It weighs 68 pounds (31 kg), making it one of the lightest BCI Group 31 size batteries.

For more information about this battery, check our Exide MC-31 and XMC-31 MEGACYCLE AGM-200 Sealed Maintenance Free (AGM) Marine Batteries article.

Lifeline Marine AGM GPL-31T Battery

lifeline agm gpl 31tLifeline Marine AGM GPL-31T Battery is deep cycle AGM marine battery. Its 20h capacity is 105 Ah, slightly better than 100 Ah. RC is very good 195 minutes and although it is deep cycle battery, it can be used as starting battery with MCA rating of 750 Amps (600 CCA).

It weighs 69 lbs (31.5 kg) and it is one of the lighter 100 Ah class batteries.

Obviously, Lifeline GPL-31T battery is designed for low current applications (less than 20-25 Amps).

Although the manufacturer states MCA/CCA values, personally, I would not use it as cranking battery - it is very good true deep cycle battery, and should be used accordingly.

Odyssey 31M-PC2150 Marine Dual Purpose Battery

odyssey 31m pc2150 1mOdyssey 31M-PC2150 Marine Dual Purpose Battery is BCI Group Size 31 battery which combines good starting power and deep cycling capabilities.

Odyssey 31M-PC2150 Marine Dual Purpose Battery is very similar to Odyssey 31-PC2150 Heavy Duty Commercial Battery, and they are both suitable for various roles, including trolling motor battery, cranking battery and similar.

Odyssey 31M-PC2150 and 31-PC2150 are internally the same batteries, but they differ in terminals and casing - Odyssey 31-PC2150 can be ordered with metal casing for higher maximum operating temperature.

Odyssey 31M-PC2150 and 31-PC2150 specifications: nominal voltage of 12V, CCA 1150 Amps, MCA 1370 Amps, HCA 1545 Amps, max. 5s current of 2150 Amps, 20h capacity of 100 Ah, 10h capacity of 92 Ah, RC 205 minutes.

Also, it weighs 77.8 pounds (35.3 kg) and it is one of the heavier batteries in its class.

For more information about this battery, check our Odyssey 31M-PC2150 Marine Dual Purpose Battery article.

Trojan SCS150 Deep Cycle Marine Flooded Battery

Trojan SCS150 is the only flooded type battery on our list - it must operate in vertical position and must be periodically checked for electrolyte levels (add distilled water if required) and it must be positioned in well ventilated space.

So, it is not maintenance free battery. Also, thanks to its design it is relatively lightweight lead-acid battery weighing just 50 pounds (22.6 kg) - it weighs 27.8 pounds LESS than Odyssey 31M-PC2150! This can be significant weight difference if battery pack of several batteries is required.

Also, note that this battery comes with MCA of 650 Amps - nonetheless, if not required, don't use it as cranking battery, it will last longer.

Reserve Capacity is 'only' 150 minutes, which is kind of low value for 100 Ah battery - it is designed for low current application and that is where it performs the best.

trojan scs150According to the official Trojan website, SCS150 is capable of providing:

- 75 Amps for 36 minutes (45 Ah capacity),
- 25 Amps (RC) for 150 minutes (2.5 hours - 62.5 Ah capacity),
- 16 Amps for 5 hours (80 Ah capacity),
- 9.2 Amps for 10 hours (92 Ah capacity),
- 5 Amps for 20 hours (100 Ah capacity),
- 1.11 Amps for 100 hours (111 Ah capacity).

Trojan SCS150 is excellent and lightweight flooded cell deep cycle battery suitable for low current applications - when it is being discharged with 10 Amps or less, its capacity is stable, but if the discharging current is increased, capacity sharply decreases, especially at and above 25 Amps.

Trojan T31-AGM 12V 100Ah Group 31 Deep Cycle Battery

Trojan T31 AGM is balanced 100 Ah AGM battery. It can be used as starting battery (720 Amps MCA), as dual purpose and as deep cycle battery.

trojan t31 agmSince 720 Amps MCA are relatively low value for 100 Ah battery, this battery should be used for low current applications:

- 25 Amps (RC) for 177 minutes (74 Ah capacity),
- 16.4 Amps for 5 hours (82 Ah capacity),
- 9.2 Amps for 10 hours (92 Ah capacity),
- 5 Amps for 20 hours (100 Ah capacity),
- 1.11 Amps for 100 hours (111 Ah capacity).

Trojan SCS150 (flooded cells) is very similar in low current performances to Trojan T31 AGM battery. However, T31 is better performer for 20 Amps or higher currents.

Note that Trojan also manufacturers Trojan T31 AGM OverDrive model, which has slightly better performances than 'regular' T31 AGM battery.

Both Trojan T31 AGM and Trojan T31 AGM OverDrive weigh 69 pounds and are much heavier than flooded cell Trojan SCS150 (weighing 'just' 50 pounds).

When compared with other 100 Ah batteries, Trojan T31 AGM is a good performer for low currents.

UPG UB121000 Deep Cycle AGM Battery

upg ub121000 1mUniversal Power Group UB121000 Deep Cycle AGM Battery is very popular BCI Group Size 27 marine battery. It is suitable for deep discharge applications, like trolling motor battery, RV battery, UPS batteries, and similar.

It can be mounted in any position, it is spill-proof, and available at affordable price.

UPG UB121000 weighs 64 pounds (~29 kg) and is one of the lighter 100 Ah batteries. It is classified as deep cycle battery and its MCA/CCA values are unknown.

Its capacity depends on the discharge current and local temperature (like any other battery).

Capacity dependency is given in the following table:

UB121000 Capacity - Discharge Current Dependency - at 77°F (25°C)

20h (5 A) 10h (9.3 A) 5h (17 A) 1h (60 A)
100 Ah 93 Ah 95 Ah 60 Ah

UB121000 Capacity - Temperature Dependency - at 77°F (25°C) / 20h rate

 104°F (40°C) 77°F (25°C) 32°F (0°C) 5°F (-15°C)
 102 Ah  100 Ah 85 Ah 65 Ah

As one can see, it is rather good performer when discharging currents are low to medium.

Since the low temperature cause lead acid battery to 'lose' capacity, whenever it is cold, it is good practice to insulate the battery and turn small light on, just to warm up battery at least a little bit.

For more information about this battery, check our UPG UB121000 Deep Cycle AGM Battery article.

VMAXTANKS SLR125 Battery

vmaxtanks slr125 agmVMAXTANKS SLR125 is BCI Group 31 size battery and it weighs 75 pounds (~34 kg). It is designed for low discharge currents and it features 125 Ah capacity when it is drained for 20 hours (6.25 Amps) and Reserve Capacity of 260 minutes (25 Amps for 3 hours and 20 minutes), which is excellent value for SLA AGM battery of this size and weight.

VMAXTANKS SLR125 Battery is excellent choice for smaller trolling motors, as deep cycle battery in double battery boat/RV systems, off-the-grid applications etc.

However, it should never be used as cranking battery - manufacturer doesn't even state CCA/MCA/HCA currents for this battery.

For more information about this battery, check our VMAXTANKS Batteries V30-800, V35-857, MR96, MR107, SLR125, MR137, SLR155 and MR197 Comparison article.

VMAXTANKS MR127-100 Battery

vmaxtanks mr127 100 agmVMAXTANKS MR127-100 Battery is 'true 100 Ah battery'. It weighs 68 pounds (30.8 kg) and is one of the lighter 100 Ah AGM SLA batteries. Reserve capacity is 200 minutes which is very good for the deep cycle battery that has MCA of 800 Amps (CCA ~640 Amps).

Note that the manufacturer states max. PHCA (Pulse Hot Cranking Amps) of 1580 Amps for duration of three seconds - although three seconds are usually more than enough to accelerate internal combustion engine (after which starting current drops even if the engine has not yet started), personally I would not use this battery as starting battery for larger diesel engines on boats and yachts. Fortunately, in most situations such boats and yachts have dual battery systems, but it is good to know that in 'worst case scenario', this battery can do its job.

Reserve Capacity of 200 minutes is very good for 100 Ah battery that has the 'tendency' to act as dual purpose battery.

For more information about VMAXTANKS batteries, check our VMAXTANKS Batteries V30-800, V35-857, MR96, MR107, SLR125, MR137, SLR155 and MR197 Comparison article.

VMAXTANKS MR137-120 Battery

vmaxtanks mr137 120 agmVMAXTANKS MR137-120 Battery is BCI Group 31 size AGM SLA battery and its 20h capacity is 120 Ah. Since it weighs 75 pounds (~34 kg) is one of the heavier batteries in this class.

Its Reserve Capacity is 230 minutes, which is very good for batteries of this size, but also it is 30 minutes less when compared with VMAXTANKS SLR125.

However, VMAXTANKS MR137-120 is designed to be discharged with higher currents, if required. In fact, it has declared MCA of 900 Amps and PHCA (Pulse Hot Current Amps) for 3 seconds burst of 1740 Amps, which is some 160 Amps more than PHCA value of VMAXTANKS MR127-100 battery (which is also some 7 pounds lighter).

If you are unsure which battery to choose, go for either Odyssey 31M-PC2150 or Exide XMC-31 - they are both excellent batteries, perhaps not the cheapest on the list, but what you pay is what you get. If you need good low current discharge battery, without the need for high discharge currents, go for VMAXTANKS SLR125. If you have weight limit, go for lithium-ion drop-in replacement like Battle Born lithium battery.

Note: if the battery doesn't perform well on the paper, check comments about its durability in real life operations - something that can't be found in charts and tables :)

Whatever you do, stay safe - these batteries are capable of producing insanely large currents that can cause fire, damage, injuries or something even worse...
