12V Lithium Batteries

12V marine, golf cart, automotive, and light industrial lithium batteries are mostly Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, designed to be used as deep-cycle and dual-purpose batteries, although with the advances in chemistry, starting Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are also available, especially for Powersports applications like motorbikes, ATVs, snowmobiles and similar vehicles where weight savings are very important.

12V Lithium Batteries Features and Specifications

12V lithium batteries feature 4 (four) 3.2V lithium cells connected in series, providing 12.8V nominal voltage, and if larger capacity is required, several such 4-cell sets are additionally connected in parallel.

12V lithium batteries support a large number of charging/discharging cycles, they tolerate deep discharges very well (up to 2000 cycles down to 100% DoD), they can be recharged with strong currents (up to 0.5-1.0C, although 0.2C charging currents are recommended), they are energy very efficient, they are much lighter than lead-acid batteries of the same capacity, etc.

On the other hand, Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries cost more than lead-acid batteries, at least initially. Also, most of them should be recharged only using dedicated lithium battery chargers or advanced AGM battery chargers that feature dedicated lithium battery charging modes.

In order to protect the battery from unwanted events, Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries should feature built-in Battery Management Systems (BMSs) that protect the battery from short-circuit, overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent, overheating, low temperature, etc.

Another disadvantage of lithium batteries is their inability to be connected in series and/or parallel in order to create larger battery packs.

Every lithium battery model is specific regarding parallel and series connections - lithium batteries should be connected in series and/or parallel only, and only if explicitly permitted by their manufacturer.

Even then, one should go only for the batteries of the same model (and from the same brand, of course) since such batteries feature the same BMSs.

Despite these limitations, there are numerous 12V lithium battery models that support connecting in parallel (to create battery packs with higher capacity) and in series (to create 24V, 36V, or 48V battery packs).

As technology improves, 12V lithium batteries either have built-in Bluetooth or WiFi module or the modules can be added later - Bluetooth or WiFi module allows the user to monitor and manage the battery via smartphone App.
