36V Lithium Batteries

36V lithium batteries are Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries intended for systems requiring more power than it is suitable/practical to provide using 12V and 24V systems.

By doubling or tripling the voltage, the required current is decreased significantly, leading to thinner wires and increased energy efficiency.

36V Lithium Batteries Features and Specifications

36V lithium batteries feature 12 (twelve) 3.2V lithium cells connected in series, providing 38.4V nominal voltage, and if larger capacity is required, several such 12-cell sets are additionally connected in parallel internally.

While 36V lithium batteries can be replaced by three 12V lithium batteries connected in series, a single 36V battery features fewer connections and less wiring, simplifying things.

For example, if an electric system requires a 3000W, a 12.8V battery would have to provide ~234 Amps, a 25.6V battery would have to provide ~117 Amps, a 38.4V battery would have to provide "only" ~78 Amps, which is much easier to control and manage current, requiring much thinner wires than 117Amps and 234Amps currents for the same energy efficiency.

And if required, some of the 36V lithium batteries support parallel/series connections, allowing the user to make 36V battery packs with larger capacity or to make 72V battery packs.

Note: Only 36V lithium battery models that are explicitly allowed by their manufacturer should be used to connect in parallel/series, as recommended by the very same manufacturer! Also, 72V is already a very serious voltage, so be very careful when working with such electric systems.

When compared with non-spillable AGM 36V battery packs which consist of three 12V AGM batteries connected in series, 36V lithium batteries are much lighter, they support a much larger number of charging/discharging cycles, they accept charger faster and are protected by internal BMSs from unwanted events, prolonging the operating lifetime of the battery.

36V Lithium Battery as Inverter Battery

 36V lithium batteries are commonly used as trolling motor batteries, as RV house batteries, as inverter batteries, as UPS batteries, and similar.

Their advantage over 12V systems can be given in a really simple example.

If the user has a power inverter with an average efficiency of 85% and average output of 1000 watts, which is enough for the fridge, TV, fan, laptop, some LED lights and similar, 36V 100Ah lithium battery can power such inverter easily - however, the question is for how long.

First we need to calculate power inverter input power:

P(input) = P(output) / 0.85 = 1177W

If the battery voltage is 36 volts (and the actual voltage of the fully charged lithium battery is 38.4V, but we are trying to calculate "worst-case scenario"), that means that the power inverter draws:

I = P(input) / U(input) = 1177W / 36V = 32.7 Amps

Since we are using lithium batteries in this example which doesn't suffer from a capacity drop like lead-acid batteries, this means that the good 36V 100Ah lithium battery can supply 1177 watts for ~3 hours, ensuring that the 36V power inverter with 85% efficiency provides 1000W to the various loads.

And since 36V 100Ah lithium batteries can provide more than the required 32.7A in this example, that means that such battery can easily provide enough power for various power spikes and surges.

Note: 36V is a serious voltage and these batteries can provide strong currents instantly - whatever You do, stay safe.
